The history of the capital city airport dates back to 1934, when it was officially opened by President Ignacy Mościcki. At that time, Warsaw gained a facility worthy of the capital of a European country. In the first year of operation, the new airport served almost 10,000 passengers.
Currently, Chopin Airport in Warsaw is the largest airport in Poland and one of the largest and most modern international transfer airports in this part of Europe. It serves scheduled, charter, cargo and General Aviation traffic. It is also adapted to receive the largest aircraft in the world.
The terminal has 108 check-in desks and 45 gates enabling convenient boarding of the plane. Passengers have at their disposal a uniform, spacious terminal, the length of which is the so-called pier is 725 m. They can take advantage of a wide range of services and catering, as well as numerous amenities that make traveling easier, including modern biometric gates for document control during departures and arrivals from the Non-Schengen zone.
Chopin Airport in Warsaw is perfectly connected to the rest of the country. This is ensured by the railway station located at the terminal, which allows transfers to other rail transfer stations, the Warsaw Southern Bypass and the A2 and S7 routes. The airport can be conveniently reached by the capital's public transport. Five bus lines from key transport hubs reach the airport.
Before the pandemic, Warsaw Chopin Airport was one of the largest airports in this part of Europe in terms of air traffic. In 2019, almost 18 million people used its services, including over 17 million international passengers. The airport offered regular connections to 133 destinations worldwide, including 14 long-haul flights, and 87 charter flights, including 20 long-haul flights.
In 2020, Warsaw Chopin Airport introduced a number of solutions to improve the sanitary and epidemiological safety of passengers in the terminal. As a result, the capital city's airport was highly rated in an audit by Skytrax, a British consulting company that reviews airlines and airports around the world.
