STUDIO BUFFO
"THE BEST MUSICAL THEATRE IN THE CAPITAL CITY..." – (R. Pawłowski – Gazeta Wyborcza)
The headquarters is located at ul. Marii Konopnickiej 6, in Warsaw, in the building of the Polish YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association), which was put into operation in 1934.
YMCA – an apolitical association providing assistance to the poor and disadvantaged, conducting educational and sports activities. The “inauguration” of the theatre stage was an exhibition of radio receivers organized by the Philips company.
During the occupation, the building was occupied by the Gestapo.
After the war, jazz concerts were very popular in the YMCA building. Jazz in the YMCA resounded thanks to records sent by its American branch for Polish members. When the YMCA in socialist Poland was dissolved, all the records, and there were about 500 of them, were smashed. Leopold Tyrmand, who was a tenant of the YMCA, immortalized it in his DIARY 1945.
In 1956, the editor of Polish Radio, author and satirist founded the Buffo theatre in the building at ul. M. Konopnicka 6. Over the following years, the stage hosted theatres ("DZIECI WARSZAWY", "SYRENA", "GULIWER", "OPERETKA", "ROZMAITOSCI"), Stołeczna Estrada, cabarets ("Pond tea at the microphone") and orchestras (including Stefan Rachoń, Jan Cajmer), which made a number of recordings for Polish Radio here.
Today the building is managed by the ZHP Headquarters.
All the most important Polish artists have performed on the BUFFO STAGE, including: Loda Halama, Adolf Dymsza, Ludwik Sempoliński, Tadeusz Olsza, Hanna Skarżanka, Mira Zimińska, Stefania Grodzieńska, Lidia Wysocka, Hanna Bielicka, Irena Kwiatkowska, Mieczysław Fogg, Bogumił Kobiela, Jerzy Wasowski, Jeremi Przybora, Alina Janowska, Wojciech Pokora, Jan Kobuszewski, Gustaw Holoubek, Rena Rolska, Anna German, Czesław Niemen, Krystyna Sienkiewicz, Wojciech Młynarski, etc., etc.
In 1992, STUDIO BUFFO sp. z o. o. is founded. It is founded by two artists: Janusz Stokłosa – composer (president), Janusz Józefowicz – director and choreographer (artistic director). They decided to establish an independent theatre in order to at least partially save the spectacularly successful METRO musical ensemble, which had been using foreign stages since its premiere and was under threat of dissolution.
The first premiere of the duo J. Józefowicz and J. Stokłosa, which they staged on the stage of the STUDIO BUFFO theatre, was the hit "DO GRAJĄCEJ SZAFY GROSIK WRZUĆ" with E. Górniak, K. Groniec, B. Melzer, R. Janowski, M. Milowicz, as well as K. Materna and W. Mann.
Operating on market principles, without using any subsidies or public grants, it has managed to create a unique theatre of Polish song. Today, the Studio Buffo theatre ensemble has in its repertoire over two hundred hits from the interwar period to the 1990s. In addition to its own performances, it also widely presents important artistic events in the field of drama, musical theatre, song, as well as jazz, cabaret and stage. In total, since 1992, over 6,000 performances and concerts have been performed, watched by over 2 million viewers.
The performers included: E. Błaszczyk, E. Geppert, AM Jopek, Sł. Przybylska, D. Stalińska, M. Umer, V. Villas, G. Wolszczak, M. Bajor, M. Czajka, J. Frycz, J. Gajos, M. Grabowski, A. Grabowski, K.
