79th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising – changes in communication

During the celebrations of the 79th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, ceremonies and events commemorating this heroic uprising will take place in the capital. Residents and travelers must expect changes in traffic and parking restrictions. Special bus and tram lines will be on the streets.

Saturday, July 29 – Downtown

Warsaw Uprising Run is a sporting accent of the anniversary celebrations. Competitors will compete on routes – over a distance of 5 and 10 kilometers. The joint start has been located at Krasiński Square, near the Warsaw Uprising Monument. The finish line will be on Konwiktorska Street. This is where the front line ran in August 1944. Most roads along the route will be closed between 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The earliest to close is Krasiński Square (at 5:00 p.m.), and the latest to return to Konwiktorska Street (only on Sunday, July 30, at around 2:00 a.m.).

Sunday, July 30 – Wola

The main celebrations, as in previous years, will begin with meetings of the President of the Republic of Poland and the Mayor of Warsaw with participants of the uprising in the Freedom Park next to the Warsaw Uprising Museum. During the event, state orders and decorations will be awarded. From Saturday, July 29, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, a ban on stopping and parking will be introduced on both sides of Przyokopowa Street – along the entire length of the Museum wall.

Monday, July 31st – Downtown

The first parking restrictions at Krasiński Square will come into effect on Sunday, July 30. At that time, the parking ban will be in effect on the eastern part of the square. On Monday, the parking ban will cover the entire square, including designated parking spaces, as well as the adjacent Długa Street - on the section from Freta to Miodowa and from Miodowa to Barokowa (on both sides of the road, excluding vehicles with a pass and taxis transporting war veterans). These restrictions are related to Field Mass and Roll Call of Remembrance, which will take place in front of the Warsaw Uprising Monument. Also for this reason, at 12:00, a traffic ban will be introduced on Długa Street near the Polish Army Field Cathedral - on the section from Miodowa to Kilińskiego. Additionally, at 17:00, a traffic ban will also be introduced on the entire Krasiński Square and a section of Miodowa Street. At that time, buses of the following lines will be directed to the detour routes, running along the nearest passable streets: 116, 178, 180, 503, 518 and N44. The changes and traffic exclusions will be in force until the end of the day.

Tuesday, August 1st – Mokotów

After ceremonies at the monument "Fighting Mokotów - 1944" in the Orlicz-Dreszer Park (10:00) will start The March of Mokotów (11:00). Its participants will walk along Puławska Street to Dworkowa - in front of the obelisk "In Memory of the Soldiers of the Home Army Insurgents of Mokotów". The event may cause changes in the routes of buses 119, 141, 172, 222, 501, 519 and 522.

Tuesday, August 1st – City Centre

Flower Laying Ceremony at the monument of General Stefan Rowecki "Grot" (1:15 p.m.), at the intersection of Chopin Street and Aleje Ujazdowskie, will be associated with parking restrictions. These will apply – also in designated parking spaces – from the beginning of the day until approximately 2:30 p.m. – on a short section of Chopin Street.

Tuesday, August 1st – City Centre

Anniversary events before a monument to the Polish Underground State and the Home Army (2:00 p.m.) at the intersection of Matejki and Wiejska streets will also involve changes to parking. A two-way ban on stopping and standing will be introduced along the entire length of Matejki Street from Aleje Ujazdowskie to Wiejska and on the northern side of Piękna Street (on the same section, also in designated parking spaces, excluding invited guests). Additionally, from 8:00 a.m. Matejki Street will be closed to traffic, from the entrance to the Canadian Embassy building to Wiejska Street. Traffic and parking restrictions will apply on August 1, from the beginning of the day until 5:00 p.m.

Tuesday, August 1st – Żoliborz

Traditionally, the culmination of the celebrations will be the W-Hour. At exactly 5:00 p.m., sirens will sound in Warsaw, and the entire capital will stop to celebrate the uprising with a minute of silence. During this time, representatives of state and local government authorities will pay tribute to the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising at the monument Gloria Victis at the Powązki Military Cemetery. In connection with the ceremonies, a parking ban will be introduced throughout the day on Ostrowiecka Street - as well as in the entire parking lot at the Military Cemetery (also for holders of a subscription with the code Z-05 - excluding buses, MTON vehicles, vehicles of invited guests and the organizer, and cars with passes). The ban on stopping and parking - excluding taxis transporting insurgents and cars of invited guests - will also apply on Powązkowska Street, on the cemetery side, on the section from the Ofiar Zbrodni Katyńskiej roundabout to Ostrowiecka. In addition, from 10:00 until the end of the day, the entrance to Ostrowiecka Street and the parking lot at the necropolis will be closed to individual traffic. Until the end of the day, only buses, MTON, vehicles of invited guests and the organizer, and cars with passes from the Warsaw City Hall will be allowed to enter.

Tuesday, August 1st – Wola

At 6:30 p.m., the ceremony of laying flowers at the barrow containing the ashes of tens of thousands of residents of the capital who died during the Warsaw Uprising will begin. In front of the "Fallen - Undefeated" monument at the Warsaw Insurgents' Cemetery in Wola A Memorial Roll Call and ecumenical prayer are also planned.

On the day of the ceremony, parking changes will be introduced. It will not be possible to leave your car on the inner carriageway of Wolska Street, from Sowińskiego towards Redutowa, throughout the day. Traffic changes will also apply between 4:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. – a ban will be introduced on entering the gravel road leading from Redutowa Street towards the monument and Sowińskiego Street (from both sides of the necropolis). Only municipal service vehicles and people commuting to properties located directly on the road will be allowed to drive from Szulborska Street towards the monument, and from Wolska Street, vehicles and taxis transporting invited guests will also be allowed.

Tuesday, August 1st – City Centre

At dusk (8:30 p.m.), residents will traditionally gather at Piłsudski Square to take part in the event "Warsaw residents sing (un)forbidden songs". From approximately 6:30 p.m. to midnight, Piłsudskiego and Małachowskiego squares, as well as Wierzbowa, Focha and Królewska streets, will be closed to traffic. Buses 106, 107, 111, 128 and 175 will be directed to detours.

Special Transport – Tuesday, August 1

On Monday, August 1, historic trams of line W and special buses of lines 912, 922, 944, 970 and 980 will appear on the streets of the capital. These lines will connect the main points of the city with places celebrating the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.

Historic trams will run on line W between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. – from Narutowicza Square along Grójecka Street, Zawiszy Square, Towarowa Street (next to the Warsaw Uprising Museum), Okopowa Street, Solidarity Avenue, Wolska Street to the Wolski Cemetery.

Five special bus lines will also be launched, connecting the Powązki Military Cemetery with various parts of the capital:

• 912 (on a one-way route) from the Powązki Military Cemetery via the streets of Powązkowska, Okopowa, Towarowa, Prosta, Kasprzaka, Aleja Prymasa Tysiąclecia, Wolska, Fort Wola to the Wolski Cemetery;
• 922 from the Powązki Military Cemetery along the streets of Powązkowska, Krasińskiego, Plac Wilsona, Słowackiego to the Marymont metro station;
• 944 from the Central Railway Station via the streets: Emilii Plater, Świętokrzyska, Marszałkowska, Plac Bankowy, Aleja “Solidarności”, Okopowa, Powązkowska to the Powązki Military Cemetery;
• 970 from the Eastern Railway Station (from the side of Kijowska Street) via the streets: Kijowska, Targowa, al. "Solidarności", Okopowa, Powązkowska to the Powązki Military Cemetery;
• 980 from the Foksal stop along the streets: Nowy Świat, Krakowskie Przedmieście, Miodowa, Senatorska, Plac Bankowy, Andersa, Nowolipki, Zamenhofa, Anielewicza (return: Anielewicza, Andersa), Okopowa, Powązkowska also to the Powązki Military Cemetery.

Buses on line 912 will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and other special lines from 2:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The basic ZTM ticket tariff will apply to special line buses and line W trams.

In the historic carriages of line W, passengers will meet conductors from the Warsaw Public Transport Enthusiasts Club. They will help validate single tickets. Short- and long-term tickets encoded on the Warsaw City Card must be validated in advance in another vehicle or metro gate.

Saturday, August 5 – Wola

The next celebrations are scheduled for Saturday, August 5, at 6:00 p.m. At that time, residents and local government authorities in front of the monument commemorating 50 thousand inhabitants of Wola murdered by the Germans during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 will pay tribute to the civilian population of Wola. The event will take place at the Remembrance Square at the fork of Leszno Street and “Solidarności” Avenue. Due to the organization of the ceremony on Saturday, from the beginning of the day until 7:30 p.m., on the sidewalk and in the bay at Wyszyńskiego Square, on the left side of the road from Leszno Street towards Żytnia Street, there will be a ban on stopping with a sign informing about the possibility of removing the vehicle at the owner's expense. The ban will not apply to cars of invited guests, taxis dropping off veterans and vehicles with the “Organizer” pass. Additionally, between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Leszno Street, on the section from “Solidarności” Avenue to Wyszyńskiego Square, will be closed to traffic. The detour will take drivers along Żelazna, Żytnia and Okopowa Streets. Buses of line 190, towards the Znana terminus, will bypass the closed section by driving along “Solidarności” Avenue and Młynarska Street.

Immediately after the ceremony in front of the monument, at around 7:00 p.m., a March of Remembrance in honor of the residents of the capital who died during the Warsaw Uprising. Its participants will walk along Leszno, Okopowa, Solidarity, Wolska and Redutowa streets to the Warsaw Insurgents Park (for the exhibition "Let's Keep Them in Memory"). Between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., there may be temporary traffic stops on the roads along which the March of Remembrance will pass.

Sunday, August 6 – Wola and Żoliborz

On Sunday, August 6th, there will be "7th Memory Run". Its participants will have to cover a symbolic distance of 1944 meters, and younger runners 400, 800 or 1000 meters. The start and finish line of the competition will be located at August 1944 Square. From there, the competitors will run along the housing estate road towards Rabsztyńska Street, where they will turn around and return to the square along Płocka Street. Due to the competition, from 10:00 to 12:00, the western part of Płocka Street - from Górczewska to Wolska - will be closed to traffic. During this time, bus lines 103 (towards the Western Railway Station) and 106 (towards Mariensztat) will also be running on detours. On the day of the competition, there will be a parking ban on the streets along which the race route has been designated.

A bicycle ward will also be on the streets The Uprising Mass. This year, cyclists will ride along the route of the Żoliborz District II. Cyclists will ride past historical places associated with the Żoliborz uprising. Participants of the event (free admission, registration required) will traditionally meet in front of the Warsaw Uprising Museum. From there, at 5:00 p.m., they will start riding along the following streets: Przyokopowa, Grzybowska, Towarowa, Okopowa, through the Kercelak roundabout, Okopowa, the "Radosława" roundabout, Jana Pawła II avenue, Grunwaldzki Square, Popiełuszki, Słowackiego, Wilson Square, Mickiewicza, Inwalidów Square, Mickiewicza, Andersa, "Solidarności" avenue, Kercelak roundabout, Okopowa, Towarowa to Prosta and the finish line. On the streets along which the column of cyclists will move, there may be temporary traffic stops. Additionally, on Sunday, from the beginning of the day until 7:30 p.m., there will be a two-way parking ban on Przyokopowa – with the exception of the “organizer’s” vehicles and bicycles. Then, between 2:30 and 8:30 p.m., the street will be closed to cars – along the length of the Museum wall – with the exception of the organizer’s vehicles.
