Tourism in Warsaw – 2019 report
We invite you to read the summary of data for the last year regarding tourism in Warsaw, which has just been published by the Warsaw Tourism Office. In 2019, Warsaw was visited by over 10 million tourists. Their opinions about the city's assets are very positive.
Who visited us?
In 2019, almost 30% of all tourists were foreigners. The majority of them were British (20%). In the next places were Germans (10%), Ukrainians (7%), Americans and Italians. Guests from Poland and abroad were most willing to come to our city to see the monuments, visit relatives or friends or simply relax.
Great reviews from visitors
Warsaw was clearly to the guests' liking: they rated its attractiveness at 9.11 on a 10-point scale. This is a record result, 0.36 points higher compared to 2018. Tourists are also eager to recommend a visit to our city to their friends and family. The average willingness to recommend a visit to Warsaw was 9.34 out of 10 points.
What did visitors most like to visit?
The Old Town and Łazienki Królewskie were consistently the most popular among tourists. The Palace of Culture and Science ranks third among Poles, and the Royal Castle among foreigners. Tourists increasingly visit places not on the list of the most popular attractions to see the diverse faces of Warsaw, such as Ząbkowska Street in Praga or the Jazdów Estate.
We like tourists
Warsaw residents are able to create a unique, friendly atmosphere, both metropolitan and local. As many as 75 percent of residents believe that the development of urban tourism has a positive impact on their lives.
Expenses of foreigners
Foreigners, including tourists, same-day visitors and expats, are an important source of income for Warsaw.
Visitors spent PLN 9.6 billion here last year – 3% more than in 2018. Almost a third of this sum was spent in the capital by the British. The average foreigner spent around PLN 2.4 thousand in Warsaw, although in some countries the average was much higher. Saudis spent the most during their stay, an average of PLN 8.5 thousand per person. An analysis prepared for the Warsaw Tourism Office by Mastercard also shows that foreigners spent the most on accommodation, restaurant services and fashion shopping. According to Mastercard data, citizens from China and Israel spend more on fashion shopping in Warsaw than visitors from other countries. In turn, people coming from southern Europe (e.g. Italy) are more likely to spend time in restaurants.
